baby steps to a better world

With 8.8 million tons of plastic trash flowing into the ocean each year, we can’t waste the opportunity to protect your child’s world while we protect their safety. Featuring fabrics made from upcycled bottles, our environmentally friendly Cycle line weaves eco-consciousness into everyday life with baby.

why plastic bottles?

Did you know that a bin lorry’s worth of plastic is dumped into the ocean every minute? If it continues at this rate, scientists estimate that there will be more trash than fish in the sea by 2050! While this is alarming, there is some good news: The very same plastic waste that pollutes our ecosystems can be repurposed to protect our planet!

giving bottles a new life

Our new Cycle collection features 100% recycled fabrics made from post consumer plastic bottles. These recycled fabrics not only reduce waste, but also give new life to pre-existing material through a process that uses less valuable energy and resources than it would take to create a brand-new product.

woven into fabrics

When you think of fabrics for babies, you probably picture soft and gentle knits – not trash that’s been floating in the ocean. And yet recycled polyester (ours is called bottletec™) is just as soft and safe for skin as virgin polyester but requires far fewer resources to produce and gives new life to plastic waste. (Talk about a win-win!)

what’s recycled?

All fabrics (canopies, seat covers, basket, etc.) within our Cycle collection are made from recycled materials – with up to 33 bottles used in a single car seat cover and up to 94 bottles used in a single stroller. Rigorous testing has proven that this upcycled material is just as soft and safe for your child as virgin polyester.

safety you can rely on

We are not implementing recycled metals or plastics into our products’ actual frameworks at this point because we just can’t be certain that these materials will sufficiently protect your child. While we want to reduce our impact, we can’t compromise the structural integrity of our products or risk your child’s safety. We’re constantly testing and re-evaluating, though, and will continue to expand our range with better solutions as they arise!

high quality means less waste

In a world of “fast fashion” where so many manufactured goods are essentially disposable, we think that one of the best ways to protect our environment is to craft high quality products that will serve families for many years. By using the best materials – from upcycled fabrics to ultra-strength steel and top of the line aluminium – we can cut down on waste and create a product that will withstand the test of time.

FAQ

Do I need to care for my cycle products differently?

This is simple image.

No! The cycle fabrics are durable woven and knits that can be cared for in the same manner as our traditional fabrics – usually by spot cleaning in situ. Refer to your instruction manual for care details.

How can I trust the quality of the recycled fabrics?

This is simple image.

You’ll find our recycled fabrics are every bit as beautiful, comfy, and durable as our other fabrics! Our rigorous testing practices ensure that there is no difference in quality between our recycled and virgin polyesters – the recycled fabrics are just easier on the environment. It’s a win-win! Our state of the art in house test lab tests all Joie fabrics for durability, as well as testing for over 150 toxic chemicals to ensure they are safe for your baby.

Are Cycle products tested differently?

This is simple image.

No! Our Cycle collection goes through the same rigorous testing as all of our Joie products. Click here to learn more about the testing we do.

Why aren’t other parts of the products made from recycled materials?

This is simple image.

We are not implementing any recycled hard goods like metal or plastic at this time, because we just can’t be sure that these materials would sufficiently safeguard your little one. When plastic is melted down and re-molded, it can lose structural integrity, which is key to ensuring our car seats and strollers keep your little ones safe through years of use. Because safety is our top priority, we always use high-quality virgin plastics to create our products.

At the same time, we care deeply about the environment and think that one of the best ways we can reduce waste is to craft high quality, durable products that will grow with families for years and years. By using the best materials: from upcycled fabrics to ultra-strength steel and top of the line aluminium, we create a product that will withstand the test of time and ultimately create less waste – because you won’t need to replace it.

Are your products recyclable?

This is simple image.

Baby gear is very difficult to recycle due to its complexity: typically, metals and plastics have to be recycled separately, so in order to recycle a car seat or stroller, it must first be broken down into its component parts at a competent facility. Because of this complexity, there is currently no industry-wide solution for baby gear recycling. We’re constantly re-evaluating and looking for new avenues though, in hopes that we can help facilitate this for our consumers in the future!

Do Cycle products come in recycled packaging?

This is simple image.

All of our cartons are both recyclable and made from 100% recycled materials! And while we’re still looking into ways to remove a few small plastic components from our packaging, all plastic used is also recyclable.

Will you be expanding your product options with recycled fabrics?

This is simple image.

We do plan to use more recycled fabrics in the future! Watch this space.
